Case Study: Low Leakage Power Supply required for use in the Medical Laser Industry

Challenge
Medical device manufacturers have some of the tightest leakage current requirements of any industry. The amount of allowable leakage current is specified to ensure that direct contact between a patient and any medical equipment is highly unlikely to result in electrical shock. Excelsys was approached by a medical laser manufacturer and were challenged to provide a power supply which can meet these stringent requirements. In the medical industry it is also imperative that any power supplies used in this equipment meets the essential standards which includes EMC compliancy and other safety standards.

Solution
The solution provided by the Excelsys team was two high efficiency XS1000 power supplies in parallel. The Xsolo (XS1000) was the ideal solution because it carries dual safety certification, both EN60950 2nd Edition for Industrial Applications and IEC60601-1-2 4th edition (EMC) for Medical Applications and easily meets the customers specifications, including leakage current. Boasting up to 92% efficiency the XS1000 is ideal for use in laser medical applications.

Benefits
As well as exceeding all of the customers critical requirements Excelsys was able to offer further benefits. The customer was able to take advantage of the availability of a remote ON/OFF signal to replace an external relay giving increased system reliability which is essential for customers in this industry.
It also made it easier to shape the required energy pulse for operation using the Itrim function of the Xsolo to tightly control output current.
